You do not need the lyrics or the artist’s name. Match the search mode to the sound you can share.

THE MELODY YOU REMEMBER

Find a song by humming

That chorus has been in your head all day. Hum or sing it for about 15 seconds in a quiet place. Hum to search looks for possible songs based on your melody.

Best starting point: the part you can hum confidently.

THE MUSIC AROUND YOU

Identify the song playing nearby

Hear a track in a café, on the radio or through a speaker? Record the original music. This music finder works with the sound you capture, so a clear clip gives it more to go on.

Best starting point: original music, with as little talking as possible.

THE CLIP YOU SAVED

Identify a song from an audio file

Have a recording with no name? Choose your audio file, say whether it contains music or humming, then listen before submitting it. This lets you find a song from audio you already have.

Use at least 10 seconds of audio in a file under 10 MB.

FROM A CLIP TO A POSSIBLE MATCH

How to find a song without knowing its name

  1. Choose your sound

Upload audio or use your microphone. Choose Record for original music and Hum or sing for your own voice.

  2. Check your clip

Play your sample back. If the melody is hard to hear, try a clearer section before starting a new search.

  3. Check the title and artist

Review the possible match. Play an available preview or follow a listening link to hear whether it is the song you meant.

A live performance, cover or remix may lead to the original recording. Some clips will not return a match.

A NAME IS JUST THE START

A song identifier that helps you check the answer

The result can include a song title, artist and available release details. Humming may return more than one candidate. Listen and compare before deciding which version matches your memory.

Better audio gives recognition a better chance

Let the melody stand out

A chorus or a clear instrumental phrase usually gives you more to work with than a single note, a spoken introduction or a drum hit.

Keep the two modes separate

Use original-music recognition for a released recording. Use humming recognition for a tune you sing or hum yourself.

Try a different part if needed

Noise, a changed arrangement or a missing catalog entry can prevent a match. A new clip is a new search, so review it first.

Questions about finding a song

A few practical details about humming, audio files and your first search.

01What is this song, and who sings it?

Start with a recording of the music or a melody you remember. Guess the Song lets you upload a clip, record nearby music, or hum and sing. The song recognizer looks for a possible title and artist. You do not need the lyrics to begin.

02Can I find a song by humming online?

Yes, when humming recognition is available. Choose Hum or sing and hum the main melody for about 15 seconds. You can also upload a saved voice recording and choose Humming or singing. Compare the possible matches rather than assuming the first result is right.

03How do I identify a song from an audio clip?

Choose Upload, browse for an audio file and select Original music or Humming or singing. Play the clip back, then start the search. For a file you recorded earlier, a clear chorus or melody is a useful place to start.

04What song is this playing in the background?

Choose Record to capture the original music through your microphone. Move closer to the speaker if you can. Speech, traffic or other sounds can hide the musical details and make recognition less reliable.

05Which audio files can I upload?

Use an audio file under 10 MB with at least 10 seconds of sound. MP3 and WAV are good starting points; other audio formats depend on what your browser can decode. The browser prepares a sample of up to 20 seconds for recognition.

06Is this an online song identifier I can use on my phone?

Yes. Use a supported phone or computer browser with an internet connection. For microphone recording, allow access when asked. If recording is not available on your device, try a compatible saved audio file.

07Is Guess the Song free?

Yes. You can upload, record and search for free without an account or payment. Usage limits apply to keep recognition available. If you reach the limit, wait a minute before trying again.

08Do I need to sign in before uploading or recording?

No. You can upload, record and search without signing in. Microphone permission is requested only when you choose to record.

09What if the song finder returns no match?

Check the input mode and listen to your sample before trying a clearer section. Searches are free, including attempts that return no match. A song outside the recognition catalog may not be found.

10Can I use a video link or type the lyrics?

The current input options are audio uploads and microphone recordings. Video links and typed lyrics are not supported. If you already have an audio clip you have permission to use, upload that file instead.

11Can a song recognizer identify covers and remixes?

Sometimes, but a different arrangement, live performance or edited recording may be harder to match. The result may identify the original song rather than the exact version. Check the artist and listen to an available preview.

12What happens to the audio I submit?

Your browser prepares the sample and sends it to a third-party recognition service when you search. The app does not permanently store raw search audio. The recognition provider processes it under its own terms; see the Privacy Policy for details.
